The Challenge: The Life-Threatening Scarcity of Clean Water
For millions of people in rural Uganda, access to clean, safe water is not a guarantee. Women and children often walk for hours every day to collect water that is frequently contaminated, leading to a high prevalence of waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea.22 Diarrhea alone is one of the leading killers of children under five in Uganda, a preventable tragedy that also contributes to malnutrition and stunted development.23 This daily struggle for water keeps children out of school and prevents women from engaging in income-generating activities, trapping communities in a cycle of disease and poverty.
Our Solution: A Two-Fold Approach to Water Security
ICFER implements a comprehensive WASH strategy that combines durable infrastructure (“hardware”) with community empowerment (“software”), a model proven effective by global leaders in the sector.
Our interventions are providing reliable access to safe water, transforming the health and daily lives of entire communities.
- We have created access to over 54,900 litres of safe drinking water daily.9
- Our projects provide 11,607 cubic meters of safe water for domestic use, benefiting over 959,400 users.9
- We have provided sustainable sanitation and handwashing facilities to over 32,600 beneficiaries.
- Key infrastructure built includes 10 large-capacity water tanks and 5 public toilet blocks.9
